Posted by kotkota in : Science , add a commentFor more than two centuries, the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has endured — as has the speculation about what led to his sudden death at age 35 on Dec. 5, 1791.
Was the wunderkind composer poisoned by a jealous rival? Did he have an intestinal parasite from an undercooked pork chop? Could he have accidentally poisoned himself with mercury used to treat a bout of syphilis?
A report in Tuesday’s Annals of Internal Medicine suggests the exalted Austrian composer might have succumbed to something far more commonplace: a streptococcal infection — possibly strep throat — that led to kidney failure.
The researchers looked at death records in Vienna during the months surrounding Mozart’s death — November and December 1791 and January 1792, and compared causes of death with the previous and following years.
“We saw that at the time of Mozart’s death there was a minor epidemic in deaths involving edema (swelling), which also happened to be the hallmark of Mozart’s final disease,” said Dr. Richard Zegers of the University of Amsterdam, one of the study’s authors. There was a spike in swelling-related deaths among younger men in Vienna at the time of Mozart’s death compared to the other years studied, suggesting a minor epidemic of streptococcal disease, Zegers said.
The cause of death recorded in Vienna’s official death register was “fever and rash,” though even in Mozart’s time those were recognized to be merely symptoms and not an actual disease.
His surviving letters and creative output suggest that he was feeling well in the months before his death and was not suffering from any chronic ailment. Many accounts note that he fell ill not long before he died — suffering from swelling so severe, his sister-in-law recalled three decades later, that the composer was unable to turn in bed.
Others who reported to have been witnesses to Mozart’s final days also described swelling, as well as back pain, malaise and rash — all symptoms that indicate Mozart may have died of kidney disease brought on by a strep infection.
“It’s not definitive, but it’s certainly food for thought,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center who was not involved in the study.
He said it was not unreasonable to presume that Mozart died from strep complications, based on the information presented, but he pointed out that the authors had scant data to go on.
“Serious streptococcal infections were much more common than they are now and, indeed, they had very serious complications,” he said. “This is sure to set off many discussions going forward.”

Whole Foods Diet Cookbook: How to Eat for Health and Taste July 22, 2009
Posted by kotkota in : Diet , add a commentI’m the type of person who loves to look through cookbooks and even occasionally buy them but has a far poorer track record when it comes to actually, you know, cooking. So it was a high point for me to make (or help make) two recipes from a cookbook within five days of getting it—edamame succotash and spice-simmered red lentil dal with pan-grilled tofu.
The book is the Whole Foods Diet Cookbook by husband-and-wife team Ivy Ingram Larson and Andrew Larson, and it’s full of recipes based on simple, minimally processed foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean protein (including some animal protein), and, in moderation, essential fats. (There’s no connection to the Whole Foods grocery chain.) Ivy first got interested in the impact of diet on health when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 22; her husband, a surgeon, joined her in her research, and together they developed an eating strategy they say has improved their health. I recently talked with Ivy about the notion of eating a whole-foods-based diet. Edited excerpts of our interview:
How do you define whole foods?
Nutrient-rich foods, packaged the way nature intended, in their unrefined state. For example, apples instead of applesauce, eggs instead of Egg Beaters, oatmeal instead of a granola bar with oatmeal in it.
How is that different from “all natural,“ “organic,“ or any of the other labels you see on foods?
You can have a product that is completely natural and not healthy. Butter, sugar, refined flour-they’re natural, but not particularly good for you. I tell people that instead of reading the macronutrient information on a label, they should focus on the ingredients. If a jar of marinara sauce contains tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil, and oregano, that’s a whole food. If it has high-fructose corn syrup, it is not.
If you don‘t count calories, though, how can you lose or maintain weight?
My research was inspired by my diagnosis, not a need for weight control. But I’ve worked with countless people [who want to lose weight], and my husband is a weight-loss surgeon. We both tell people that eating nutrient-rich whole foods will support a healthy metabolism and keep food cravings under control. Whole food takes up a lot of space in your stomach, so you’ll feel more full for hours. This won’t work if you eat when you’re not hungry, though. Sometimes people eat multiple times in the day and are never quite satisfied. We’d prefer you to eat good foods until you’re satisfied, then you can last for a long time before eating again.
You say people should outright avoid trans fats, omega-6-rich vegetable oils (like soybean, corn, and safflower oils), refined flour, and refined sugar. Why?
If you read the label on packaged, processed foods, those are the main four that will be in there. Rather than memorizing long lists of chemicals, just look for them; the product is not going to be made up of whole foods.

Clear up the fat picture. We‘ve been told saturated fat is bad, but in your book you advocate the use of coconut oil, a saturated—albeit plant-derived—fat.

There has been some research suggesting that extra-virgin coconut oil—not the processed plant oil found in packaged foods—is not as harmful as the saturated fats in animal-based products. But in moderation, say, in baking to substitute for butter, it’s fine.

I guess you don’t really need dessert, but I feel like I do! I try not to ever make a totally junky dessert—and to get nutrients in there through things like nuts and fruit. There is really no reason to abstain from wine in moderation, unless you have a tendency to escalate your drinking. You know yourself and whether you’re likely to do that. But from a weight-loss standpoint, you’re better off having wine rather than dessert.

Posted by kotkota in : Web , add a commentA country club on the fringes of London has been the meeting place for all sorts of powerful and interesting people from all over the world for the last two days.
They included political figures like Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell, business leaders from Sir Richard Branson to Jean-Bernard Levy of Vivendi, media bosses like the BBC’s Mark Thompson and Carolyn McCall of Guardian Media Group – and even royalty in the form of Prince Charles and the crown princes of both Spain and Norway.
Who could attract such a crowd? Google, of course. Its annual Zeitgeist event is becoming a rival to the World Economic Forum in Davos for movers and shakers who want to know where the most powerful business on the web is heading.
On the final afternoon, even a few journalists were allowed in for what seemed like a routine demo of products that many of us had already seen – like Google Squared, the “structured data search” which might blow Wolfram Alpha out of the water when it launches, or Gmail Video Chat, which is already out there for anyone to try.
Then, without warning and just as the journalists were in danger of nodding off, two billionaires slipped quietly into the room, and we all perked up. Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, and Larry Page, the firm’s co-founder, had come to answer our questions..
No, Larry Page revealed, he hadn’t tested Wolfram Alpha yet, though his co-founder Sergey Brin had tried the computational knowledge engine – and, of course, any competition was welcome.
Google Video Chat was better quality than Skype and yes, “quite significant” numbers of people were using it – this was Eric Schmidt’s response to my sceptical query about the product. Others wanted to know whether Twitter, now increasingly seen as a “breaking news” service by its users, was forcing Google to focus on real-time search.
Larry Page said that speed and relevance were Google’s watchwords – the company even gave out stopwatches to its employees to stress that message – but he didn’t seem too worried about Twitter.
One subject on just about everyone’s mind, however, was privacy. A German journalist appeared particularly concerned that her house could be seen on Street View – to such an extent that Eric Schmidt seemed eager to deal personally with getting it removed.
Street View is just one issue which is helping to crystallise the concerns of both consumers and regulators about the threat which the search giant might pose to privacy. But Larry Page, in particular, seemed determined to prove that he wouldn’t let the business be shackled by such concerns.
To the journalists, and later to the whole Zeitgiest crowd during an onstage chat with Eric Schmidt, he enthused about a couple of Google geo-location products: Latitude and an Android application called Tracks, which tell your firends where exactly you are.
And, when asked about EU pressure to reduce the length of time that Google holds on to data, he had a clear riposte. That sort of policy, he explained, could make the data less valuable not just for his company, but for anyone wanting to predict events like a flu pandemic by examining patterns in searches over a long period: “I don’t feel the public as a whole and the regulators have engaged in enough of a debate to know what the issues are.”
Faced with the prospect of more regulation, guess what? Google thinks that that’s a really bad idea. “Historically, when markets get regulated, the rate of innovation slows dramatically,” Eric Schmidt told us.”We don’t think that’s a good outcome – we think a better outcome is for us to use good judgement. We take what we see as the consumer interest as our guiding principle.”
Google’s billionaire bosses are amiable fellows, willing to engage with journalists on just about any issue. But as their company reaches into every corner of our online lives, they are bound to face more questions about how they wield their power. Telling the regulators that Google knows best what’s good for consumers may not wash.

South Carolina Holds Its Own Poll, Still Loses May 20, 2009

The poll results from yesterday are in, and it isn’t even close. 80% of you think Craigslist (46 million US visitors) is more important than South Carolina (4.5 million residents). Background on the conflict is here.
The numbers are obviously not statistically relevant since TechCrunch readers, a tech savvy lot, are going to be more likely to side with Craigslist. But South Carolinians (or whatever it’s supposed to be) apparently aren’t too thrilled with their state, either. The Palmetto Scoop, a popular conservative blog in South Carolina, held their own poll today and asked “Which is more important, 2,500 TechCrunch readers (the total number that had voted as of this post) or enforcing the law?”
As of right now, 60% of the 124 respondents say, well, TechCrunch is more important than enforcing the law (which isn’t really what the Craigslist issue is about anyway).
Your conservative voters have spoken, Mr Attorney General McMaster. We’ll draw up the secession paperwork for your signature.

Posted by kotkota in : Space , add a commentIn a make-or-break attempt to free a stuck bolt holding an old camera in place on the Hubble Space Telescope, spacewalker Andrew Feustel, anchored to the end of the shuttle Atlantis’ robot arm, used old-fashioned elbow grease to save the day, releasing the bolt and clearing the way for installation of a powerful new camera.
If the bolt had snapped–and that was a possibility–the astronauts would have been unable to remove the 16-year-old Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. In that case, the new $132 million Wide Field Camera 3 would have been returned to Earth aboard Atlantis in a major disappointment for the science community.
“I don’t normally reveal my age and I’m not going to here, but I can tell you, I’m five years older now than I was when I came to work this morning,” Hubble Project Scientist Dave Leckrone told reporters after the spacewalk was over. “We were concerned we might not end up with our highest priority instrument in.”
But after removing a torque limiter from his wrench and applying more muscle power, Feustel was able to loosen the stuck bolt to the relief of concerned scientists, engineers, and flight controllers. He and partner John Grunsfeld then removed the old camera without incident.
Dubbed “the camera that saved Hubble” by project scientists, WFPC 2 took most of the spectacular photos that have made Hubble a national icon since it was installed in the telescope during the first servicing mission in 1993.
“It’s been in there for 16 years, Drew, and it didn’t want to come out,” Grunsfeld said.
The spacewalkers had no problems installing the new camera and a science instrument command and data-handling system computer to replace a unit that failed last September, triggering a seven-month delay for the Atlantis servicing mission.
Grunsfeld also installed a grapple fixture on the base of the space telescope that will help a future crew, or a robotic spacecraft, lock onto the observatory to drive it safely out of orbit when its useful life ends.
Finally, the astronauts installed special latches on critical access doors to make it easier to reach telescope components later in the mission. Two of four latches could not be fully engaged, but the astronauts worked around that by installing alternate devices.
“Well, we got to Hubble and gave Hubble a hug,” Grunsfeld said from the airlock when the day’s work was done. “In traditional Hubble fashion, Hubble threw us a few curves. But I think it’s really a testament to the whole team on board here and of course, on the ground…that we were able to overcome them.”
The spacewalk began at 8:52 a.m. and ended with airlock re-pressurization at 4:12 p.m. for a duration of seven hours and 20 minutes. It was the 19th extravehicular activity (EVA) devoted to servicing the Hubble Space Telescope, the first of five planned by the Atlantis astronauts, the sixth for Grunsfeld and the first for Feustel.
The first item on the agenda was installation of the new Wide Field Camera 3. Attempting to remove the old camera, Feustel initially was unable to loosen a critical bolt holding the instrument in place. Grunsfeld returned to the airlock and retrieved a torque limiter and Feustel tried again, exerting more force. The bolt refused to budge.
“Drew, do you have any other suggestions before I check with Houston?” astronaut Mike Massimino called from inside the shuttle.
“No, I’m afraid I don’t. I’m out,” Feustel said.
Working through a contingency checklist, Feustel then removed the torque limiter from his wrench–a device that was limiting the applied torque to 45 inch pounds–before trying to apply more elbow grease directly to the stuck bolt.
“I just want to understand how far can we go with this and what are the implications if I over-torque and break the bolt?” Feustel asked.
“Are you sure you want to know?” Massimino quipped. He then called Houston: “We know the failure torque on this bolt is 57.1 foot pounds,” Massimino radioed. “He had the MTL (multi-setting torque limiter) set at 45. What the crib sheet says is if we don’t get it to break (loose) here, we’re going to reconnect the ground strap and blind mate connector. So I guess Drew’s just wondering how hard he should try on this A latch? If you have any words for us, we’d appreciate it.”
“Atlantis, Houston, we copy that. And thanks for asking,” replied Dan Burbank in mission control. “There’s actually no issue with having the latch taken all the way to the failure point. The instrument should still function. So Drew can have at it, and you’re correct, if we get to that point, we will need to reconnect the ground strap blind mate connector and we’ll just leave it as is.”
“So in other words, he can use what he needs from his strength to try to break the torque, is that what you’re telling us?” Massimino asked.
“That’s exactly right,” Burbank said. “And as soon as he does, if he’s successful, starts to have some motion in the latch, we’d like to go ahead and stop at that point.”
“OK, thanks, Dan.”
“OK, but I think we understand if it breaks, then Wide Field (Planetary Camera 2) stays in,” Grunsfeld chimed in, verifying the make-or-break nature of the next step.
“What John said is correct,” Burbank confirmed.
“OK, here we go,” Feustel said, attaching the socket, sans torque limiter, to the attach bolt. Then, a moment later: “I think I got it! It turned, it definitely turned. And it’s turning easily now.”
“OK, Atlantis, Houston, for EVA, we copy, that’s great news,” Burbank said.
A few minutes later, Feustel attached a power wrench and backed the bolt out all the way to free the camera.
“Woo hoo, it’s moving out,” he said.
“That’s great news,” Massimino said. “That’s awesome.”
From that point, the camera replacement work went smoothly and the Wide Field Camera 3 was installed without incident. Engineers at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., then sent commands to verify the new camera was hooked up properly and functioning as expected.

“Good news,” Burbank called. “Aliveness test on Wide Field 3 is good.”
“That’s awesome news, Dan, thanks,” Massimino replied. “These guys did a great job and we appreciate all the great support we got from the ground getting Wide Field in to unlock the secrets of the universe.”
“More of the secrets,” chimed in astronomer-astronaut Grunsfeld.
“More of the secrets of the universe,” agreed Massimino.
Initial checkout of the replacement science data computer also went well.
Total Hubble EVA servicing time now stands at 136 hours and 30 minutes. Grunsfeld’s total EVA time through six spacewalks stands at 44 hours and 52 minutes, putting him eighth on the list of most experienced spacewalkers.
